From not much bigger than the head of a pin when they hatch from their egg, monarch caterpillars grow to about the size of your little finger, shedding their skin after each stage. When fully grown, they stop eating and go find a nice place to form their chrysalis.

About as long as the edge of a penny, this just-hatched caterpillar will eat the shell of its egg before starting on the milkweed. (Common Milkweed).
